DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
I got my new rifle and tried to disassemble it, but the receiver cover doesn't seem to want to slide off. Should I use pliers or something?
Never mind, pliers with a cloth worked. I am going to have to oil it to make it smooth for next time. |
Re: DSARMS SA58 FAL Disassembly
on another note, at http://www.dsarms.com/brebarrel.asp they say to do all this to break in the barrel. Is that to excessive? Fire one bullet, then use a copper cleaner, and repeat for 10 shots. Then fire two bullets and clean, and do for 10 shots that way.

Re: DSARMS SA58 FAL Disassembly
It also could depend on the type of top cover.
Most new top covers are sprung so they are a tight fit on the receiver. If you cover your plier jaws with a thick cloth and give a light squeeze that could help a bit and should go on and off a little easier. Or you could let it wear in. Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
I've read a lot on barrel break-in...........IMO it's not necessary.
If you want to try, it won't hurt ~ but I would try to abstain from rapid fire at least for the first 200 rounds due to excessive heat buildup. Just my 0.02 cents |
Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
Good barrel break in information
http://www.snipercountry.com/Article...el_BreakIn.asp http://www.yarchive.net/gun/barrel/break_in.html I don't do it. |
Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
Oh, it's a BADGER barrel...probably chrome moly, not lined...still wouldn't bother to break it in. Waste of ammo. It's a battle rifle for Pete's sake.

Actually I went for the simpler 18 inch barrel version.

Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
Damn, those are really $1700??? Nice weapon though but man that is higher than I would have thought. Never priced those types of guns though before. I think I would rather buy an M1 Garand, AK and a Glock for the price of one of those.

Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
I went ahead and did a little barrel break in. One patch with copper remover, one patch with windex, then a dry patch. Will do a little more next week, then I'm done.
The recoil wasn't bad at all. I had a leather jacket on though since I wanted to see what it was like. Later I will adjust the gas. The only rounds I could use for some Federal brand soft points, so every once it a while I have to move the slide again if it got stuck. I was only loading single shots in the mag. When I go outdoors after the break-in it will be all ball ammo. |
Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
Why are you using copper remover and windex in the barrel of a new rifle?
This seems more likely to cause a problem than solve one. . . . . edit: I have fired several times my own body weight in 308, through various rifles, including the FAL. I have never introduced either windex nor copper remover into any firearm. I am not aware of any rifle damaged or made inoperative by a lack of windex. |
Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
i do the barrel break in on my long range rifles. Fire a shot, copper clean it, jb-bore paste, solvent, fire another. About 10 times then i call it good.

Could you go into more details on moving "the slide again if it got stuck"? Did it seem like the rifle wasn't ejecting the rounds properly, or the bolt would get stuck before fully closing (after stripping a round off the magazine)? |
Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
More guns have been ruined by breaking in barrels and escessive cleaning. I know because of my mistakes. Clean rifle before you go to range. Shoot rifle. Clean rifle after shooting. Done!

Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
The Bushmaster Varminter I just bought even comes with a yellow warning message to break it in. Honestly I dont know that does any good, but I also don't believe it hurts. My FFL is going to the range with me to fire the varminter and he's a former recon guy so the odds of me getting away without breaking it in are slim to none LOL

Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
Are any of those SA58's NY legal? Except of course the "California legal" series they have... those are lame with fixed magazines...
I'd like a SA58 carbine model but it seems they all exceed NY's communist gun laws. |
Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
just checked on the windex contents. looked like mostly WATER, with some ammonia and detergent.
sounds like 3 of the most idiotic things to pour down the barrel of your own rifle. |

The bolt would sometimes get stuck before fully closing. I know it's recommended to use ball ammo, but the soft points were the only ones I could find in all copper jacket. |

See if the same failure occurs with FMJ ammo. It sounds like you have a wimpy recoil spring or some other (vague) problem. Feeding more gas to the action might help things a bit. |

Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
It's still new and probably a little stiff...shoot it some more 'til it loosens up a bit or try another mag.
Make sure you pull the bolt handle all the way back and let fly. Don't be too gentle. All of my FALs will do this a bit until warmed it. Doesn't have anything to do with the gas system. |
Re: DSARMS SA58 barrel break-in
Thanks. will try that and let it warm up a bit. On another note, I thought the serial number needed to be stamped on the lower, instead up the upper.
